that “Poem of the Week” could possibly be called “Poem of the Month“. I cannot imagine revising a poem satisfactorily in a week. Of course, that may just be laziness, but in my case it’s other things — like the need for the thing to stew — as well.
With regard to the current poem, my thoughts about revision include triangles and other things that come in threes. Slave ships’ trajectories were three-sided: Europe (where they were usually built) to Africa, Africa to the so-called New World, and the Americas to Europe again. The slaves came across on the Middle Passage, the bottom of the triangle.
The poem’s already divided into three; I did that intuitively. But the way forward for the revision, I’m thinking, needs to play off that some more.
